Ordinary Parental Leave
Ordinary Parental Leave is a period of leave from work that employees can request in order to look after a child's welfare. It is normally unpaid and is available for each of your employees' children, up to their 18th birthday.
Ordinary Parental Leave should not be confused with Shared Parental Leave , which is a separate entitlement for eligible parents of children.
Conditions relating to Ordinary Parental Leave include:
- Employees must have completed one year's continuous service with their employer to qualify.
- A maximum of 18 weeks of unpaid leave can be taken for children under 18 years of age, subject to a maximum of four weeks being taken each calendar year.
- Leave may be taken straight after the birth or adoption, or following a period of maternity leave.
Ordinary Parental Leave must be taken in blocks of a week, or multiples of a week, but cannot be taken as "odd" days off, unless the employee's child is disabled.
